It is the second best increase after the US one, which in the same period was 66.6% which brought the value of exports from 3.32 to 5.53 billion.

Among the main export destination countries of the Veneto Region, only the United States has grown more than Poland in the last 8 years. And if the stars and stripes market remains third in the ranking after Germany and France, the Polish one climbs 7 positions, from thirteenth place in 2012 to sixth in 2020.

Eksport Regionu Wenecji do Polski w latach 2012-2020

The historical series of Istat data processed by Unioncamere Veneto on the 14 foreign country markets where regional exports exceeded one billion euros in 2020 show how the value of flows to Poland increased by 58.4% from 2012 to 2020 (from 1 , 16 to 1.85 billion).

Second best increase after the US, which in the same period was 66.6% (from 3.32 to 5.53 billion). And the performance would have been even better without the contraction in the horribilis year of Covid: in 2019 Veneto exports to Poland had in fact reached 1.92 billion (+ 64.7% on 2012), the third growth ever since 2012 after USA (+ 68.7% to 5.6 billion) and Spain (+ 66.1% to 3.46 billion).

Ekonomiczny zarys Polski

Poland deserves a lot of attention. Eighth economy in the EU area in terms of real GDP (estimated at current prices in October 2021 of 523.5 billion euros, up 4.5% on 2020, public debt / GDP around 50%), is perceived as the new European growth engine and natural leader in Central and Eastern Europe.

A vibrant, export-oriented, internationally competitive private economy. A nation with educated and skilled human capital, Poland is the only country in the European Union to have avoided recession at the time of the 2008 global financial crisis, with an average increase in GDP over the last 10 years of more than 3%. The only recession in 2020 due to Covid, however contained (-2.5%).

But obviously in this period there are economic uncertainties also in Poland, linked to the rising price trend (inflation in September 2021 + 5.5%) and to the delays in the supply chains from Asia which partly affect the important system as well. Polish industrialist.

Zarys Unia Europejska – Polska

There are many political questions on the evolution of the ongoing clash with the EU, a situation that, if not unblocked, could have a strong impact on the economy as well. That is the question, so far very hypothetical but not entirely strange, of the Polexit.

Therefore Poland deserves even more attention in this period, in which relations between Warsaw and Brussels are really bad with the infringement procedures adopted by the EU and the speculated attitude of open challenge of the Polish government towards the European institutions. Tensions involving the resources of the  Recovery and Resilience Plan EU  for Poland, 57.3 billion euros of which 23.1 non-repayable, not yet approved pending the developments of the meetings underway in recent months between the two parties. Just the other day, the EU Court of Justice sentenced Poland to pay a daily penalty of one million euros per day for not suspending the application of the national provisions relating to the jurisdiction of the disciplinary chamber of the Supreme Court. This is in addition to another penalty of 500,000 euros per day decided in September on environmental matters, due to Warsaw's failure to comply with a ruling by the EU Court of Justice which had imposed the shutdown of the Turów lignite mine near the border with the Czech Republic.

Net of the political outcomes of the challenge posed by Warsaw within the EU, a continuing blockade of the Recovery and Resilience Plan funds would still have a significant impact on the business prospects of many international companies that export and invest in Poland in various sectors. Even for the Italian ones.

Eksport i włoska Foreign Direct Investment w Polsce

Poland is an important and very promising market for Italian exports. According to data from the GUS (Central Statistical Office in Poland) processed by ICE Warsaw, Italy is the third exporting country to Poland after Germany and China with a 5.2% share equal to a value of 11.78 billion euros. in 2020. With Italian exports at 8.12 billion in the first half of 2021, an annual growth of 41% compared to 2020, the main items of which are machinery and equipment (17.1%), metallurgical products (15.3% ) and the fashion system (13.6%).

While as regards foreign direct investments, in a country that since 2010 has seen the FDI stock increase by 70% from 153 billion euros in 2010 to 259 billion in 2020 with an average annual inflow of over 10.5 billion (source Bank Central Polish - NBP), Italy with 6.4 billion is in twelfth place (first is Germany with 48.8 billion).

According to the data of the institutional actors of Italian commercial diplomacy in Poland there are about 2,500 companies with Italian capital (including those of a commercial and service nature, from spa and srl to numerous sole proprietorships), but 80% of the turnover is made by the main players in the manufacturing sector. The most important names are Brembo, Elica, Ferrero, FCA, Generali, Leonardo, Magneti Marelli, Mapei, Marcegaglia. While until 2016 the most important Italian investor had been Unicredit, owner of the second Polish bank which was later sold to the Polish state insurance company PZU.

The presence of Italian companies, including medium-sized ones, is particularly significant in the automotive and household appliance subcontracting, two sectors in which Poland boasts an industrial structure and an ability to attract first-rate investments.

For ICE Warsaw, the sectors with the most promising opportunities for foreign investors are infrastructure, environment, energy, automotive & e-mobility, electronics, agro-food, manufacturing 4.0 and high-tech.

Polski rynek pracy

The IC&Partners group of Udine has a consolidated twenty-year experience in accompanying Italian (and not only Italian) companies to establish themselves in the Polish market, specialized in consulting for business internationalization with offices in various countries where it provides consultancy in tax, legal, accounting, administrative, labor law and entry strategy fields.

Guido Parodi, director at IC&Partners Poland which operates in the country with four offices and a team of multidisciplinary training professionals including the ITC capable of operating in different languages, underlines the dynamism of the labor market in Poland as one of the most important factors that they have determined and determine the attractiveness of investments.

However, it is accompanied by the difficulty for companies that structure their presence in Poland to find personnel, especially in urban and industrial areas with full employment, in quantity and price and sometimes even with the skills sought by companies. In a country with an average unemployment rate of 5.8% (value of August 2021, source GUS), an average employment rate of 68.7% between the ages of 15 and 64 and a wage increase rate of approximately 3% every 16 months, it is not easy to find adequate human resources to meet the needs of companies, especially in certain areas such as the production areas of Silesia and the main cities.

Areas (such as Warsaw, Krakow and Wroclaw) where unemployment also drops to around 3%, and where the average gross salary is higher than the national average (which in companies in September 2021 is about 1.300 euros per month, source GUS).

Analiza do pogłębienia

The competitive Polish job market, with its different characteristics depending on the sectors and geographic areas, is just one of the many ideas that deserve an in-depth study of the path that Italian companies face in the country. Sector by sector: from industrial technologies in various fields to infrastructures, from the automotive supply chain to investments for the energy transition, from business service centers to the value chains of Italian taste and style of the fashion, home and agri-food systems. Topics to be explored, because Poland really deserves a lot of attention.
